5 Little-Known Facts about Me (That Have Nothing to Do with Books or Writing)

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, then you probably know some of my favorite things: Peter Rabbit and Beatrix Potter, The Wizard of Oz, fairy gardens, Babylon 5, and world folk music, among other things. Well, just for fun, I thought I’d share five little tidbits about me that have nothing to do with writing, fantasy, or geekery in general. So if you want to get to know me better, read on!

I love rabbits

I have a pet cat at the moment (and I’ve almost always had at least one cat as a personal or family pet for my entire life). But I also love pet rabbits, and I owned rabbits for a good twenty years. I’m taking a break from bunnies for a few years, because they’re really a lot of work (much more work than cats and dogs put together). But rabbits are entertaining and intelligent animals and life is never dull with bunnies in the house. (Remind me to tell you sometime about my bunny who could open doors, or my other bunny who was a climber.)

Even though I’m shy and try to avoid confrontation, I signed up for safety patrol in 5th grade and loved it

To this day, I have no idea why I did this, nor why I was apparently a successful safety patrol officer for the entire school year. Granted, I was assigned a side hallway and all I ever had to do was make sure that no one snuck out the back door to the playground. But still, I cheerfully told people not to run in the hallways, and I was never confronted by the more aggressive students. Maybe it was me acting out my desire to be acknowledged and respected? I was painfully shy, so I guess the badge and belt gave me confidence.

Occasionally I break from my folk/new age/world music playlists, and listen to some hard rock.

I like soothing new age music, ancient folk songs, and edgy genre-blending world music. But every now and then, I like something different. Sometimes that something different is showtunes or classical music, and sometimes it’s not:

I have a small obsession with socks

One of the reasons I love fall and winter is because I get to wear cozy socks. And as much as I love wearing boots, the main purpose of boots is to wear boot socks. Cute, fuzzy, mismatched patterns, toe socks – I love them all. If I could go around in sock feet all the time (no shoes), I’d be happy.

I put a sticker on my laptop and it’s slightly crooked, and it doesn’t annoy me

For all you non-Stargate fans out there, the triangle with the circle over it is the symbol for Earth. Now you know.

Normally I’m borderline OCD about things of this sort being straight. You know, my pens and pencils have to all be straight and even if they’re lying on the desk, throw rugs need to be lined up with the wall or centered perfectly under furniture. I’m the sort of person who struggles not to straighten the pictures on the walls in other people’s houses. But when I stuck this Stargate sticker on my laptop, it wound up being slightly crooked. At first I was irked (especially since now it was stuck and I couldn’t re-stick it), but I quickly got over it. It’s probably because I rarely see the sticker myself, as it’s on the lid of my laptop. So if I’m working at a coffee shop, I can only assume that people think I am a geek who doesn’t mind things being crooked (unless they have no idea what the sticker is from, then they just think I’m a weirdo who doesn’t mind things being crooked). And I know it doesn’t look crooked in this picture, but trust me, it’s crooked enough to have initially annoyed me.
