The Snow Queen

The Snow Queen

The subtitle for this post (if I were to do such a thing) should be “The Blue-Haired Writer Girl Gets all Dressed Up.”

A couple of weeks ago my fabulous hair stylist invited me to be her hair model for the Christmas Open House at her salon. I was quite honored, because she has many clients who could model her talents (including other clients who also have uniquely-colored hair). Her vision for the event was to go with a snow queen theme, and so I was dressed accordingly.

As I sat there being painted up, dressed up, and having about a pound of bobby pins and hair spray put in my hair, I remarked to her that this was not only a fun experience, but would be great fodder for my writing. Every good writer knows how to use Google (some of us a bit too well. Who has ever googled “will a human body fit into the trunk of a Honda Accord?” or “how to make a home-made bomb”)? 5 Little-Known Facts about Me (That Have Nothing to Do with Books or Writing)

If you’ve been following my blog for a while, then you probably know some of my favorite things: Peter Rabbit and Beatrix Potter, The Wizard of Oz, fairy gardens, Babylon 5, and world folk music, among other things. Well, just for fun, I thought I’d share five little tidbits about me that have nothing to do with writing, fantasy, or geekery in general. So if you want to get to know me better, read on!

I love rabbits

I have a pet cat at the moment (and I’ve almost always had at least one cat as a personal or family pet for my entire life). But I also love pet rabbits, and I owned rabbits for a good twenty years. I’m taking a break from bunnies for a few years, because they’re really a lot of work (much more work than cats and dogs put together). But rabbits are entertaining and intelligent animals and life is never dull with bunnies in the house. (Remind me to tell you sometime about my bunny who could open doors, or my other bunny who was a climber.)

Even though I’m shy and try to avoid confrontation, I signed up for safety patrol in 5th grade and loved it

To this day, I have no idea why I did this, nor why I was apparently a successful safety patrol officer for the entire school year. Granted, I was assigned a side hallway and all I ever had to do was make sure that no one snuck out the back door to the playground. But still, I cheerfully told people not to run in the hallways, and I was never confronted by the more aggressive students. Maybe it was me acting out my desire to be acknowledged and respected? I was painfully shy, so I guess the badge and belt gave me confidence. Continue reading

5 Things Star Trek has Taught Me about Writing

While I could write about this subject at most any time, I thought it would be appropriate now, while we’re still celebrating the 50 year anniversary of Star Trek. I’ve posted many times about the writing tips and techniques that I’ve learned from the sci-fi show Babylon 5, but since Star Trek was my first science fiction love, I thought it was high time I give it its due.

So here are five things, in no particular order, that Star Trek (mostly TNG, but really, all the series) has taught me about writing and storytelling:

The importance of supporting characters

Everybody loves the heroes of the story, but supporting and minor characters help round out the world. Whether your story has an ensemble main cast (like Star Trek) or just one main protagonist, you need other characters to serve specific roles and to provide more opportunities for interaction and character growth for your main characters. With a longer work (like a novel, a series of novels, or a TV show), you have the opportunity to expand on the minor characters that come and go, and turn some of them into recurring characters. Autumn Sky

Not much of a post this week. My favorite season, fall, is almost here. Well, technically, it arrived a week or so ago, but in my neck of the woods the leaves haven’t started turning yet and the weather is just barely starting to cool down at night.

I’m always inspired by nature, so I thought I’d share a picture I captured the other day. Enjoy!
